I am addicted to Google Trends. There is no doubt about it. I have been using it for my investments for well over five years and started using it to rank websites back in 2008 and 2009. In fact, I started using it when it was called Google Insights for Search. Google merged the two on September 27th, 2012. Through all the years I have remained enamored with the way people search. I have read many books such as Click and Tipping Point. Search psychology is part of the reason I do what I do – rank business websites to help professionals make more money.
Last week I clicked on Google Trends and noticed it was totally different. There was a long list of trending topics and you could now view search trends for the past one hour, four hours and day. This was not available until the recent update in June 2015. If you want to spend hour upon hour just having some fun, go type in some generic search terms to see how they are searched throughout the day and week. Try “TV”.
Some are predicting that these latest “real time” search updates are going to be part of the newest Google algorithm updates. I have been getting asked a lot of questions about the core algorithm that updated just last week and honestly I am still looking for a few answers. As always, quality and quantity are getting rewarded. Most of the websites that have seen a jump in traffic are news websites that are updated multiple times per day.
My website, this one, is often updated a handful of times a day and I rarely see a drop in traffic other than late nights and on weekends. In fact, I have done a few tests to published multiple blog posts in an hour just to see what happens with my real time search. Almost every single time I do this I see a significant jump in traffic. I am going to do some testing on websites for lawyers, orthodontists, mortgage brokers and real estate agents as well. It will be interesting to see if business websites will see a jump in traffic if they are updated throughout the day.
So, is the new Google Trends algorithm part of the Google Search algorithm? I am going to continue to crunch some data and I will let you know over the next few days and weeks.
