Well, we all knew it was going to happen and now we have a date. Starting April 21st, 2015 mobile friendliness of a website will be a search ranking factor. You can find the official Google Webmaster Tools blog post here. Note that it states that “this change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.” This means we will see different search results on desktop browsers when compared to search results on Android smartphones and iPhones. This will be quite the shakeup in the SEO world.
One would imagine these search results would be used for tablets as well. So, if you get a lot of search visitors from the iPad, Android tablets or smartphones it is highly suggested that you test your website for mobile friendliness right now.
