Why Do High School and College Girls Say Bet? What Does It Mean?

If you have been around anyone between the ages of 14 and 22 you have likely heard them say “bet”. If you make a statement in which they do not think you can fulfill a duty or service they will say “bet”. In essence, they are saying this because they want to “bet” you cannot do something. An example would be, “I make $60,000 a year as a blogger”. Their response would be, “bet”.

The most frustrating thing for many guys, especially older guys, is we have no idea what this means. It is awkward to make a statement and their response is a three letter word. This continues the trend of the younger generation coming up with their own language and vocabulary. Many high school and college girls use the acronym “WYD” which means what are you doing? They use v for very and “k” as a way to confirm something but with sarcasm or frustrating.

There is a whole sub context for using “K” to frustrate your boyfriend, girlfriend or crush. If you are an older guy and you are dating younger women or are simply around them a lot, you are going to hear “bet”. When they say this, just confirm that what you said is, in fact, true and simply move on. This is a behavior that is not going to change in the near future and it will become even more prevalent.
