On October 24th, 2016 the Los Angeles personal injury world was flipped upside down. Google search results completely changed. In fact, some of the law firms that now rank at or near the top of search results were nowhere to be had several days ago. Search results on the iPhone and Android mobile search have changed and desktop search is in constant flux. So, what happened? Was there a Penguin or Panda algorithm update? Did your law firm website get penalized?
As of October 25th, 2016 we are still digesting what is going on with the Google search results. Some of the results are quite bizarre as a Yelp Lawyer page ranks #3 on mobile search for “Los Angeles Car Accident Lawyer” and several firms are showing up in the Local 3 pack that have almost zero organic search presence.
If you are trying to rank for “Los Angeles personal injury lawyer” or “Los Angeles car accident lawyer” and you have seen your search results change drastically in the last 24 to 48 hours do not jump to immediate conclusions. Remember that Google often attempts to tinker with its algorithm for short periods of time. The same law firms that have always ranked may very well come back to the top of Google search. That said, if you want a professional opinion when it comes to the SEO of your website do not hesitate to reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We can help you determine why your website might have dropped or completely disappeared from Google search.
Is this a Google Panda or Penguin algorithm update? It is not uncommon for Google to release “p” named animals into the wild during the month of October. We have always guessed this was a strategy before the big holiday shopping season that begins around Halloween. It would make sense that Google would want to reduce spam and poor websites before billions of searches are made during the last two months of the year.
That said, we have yet to hear any confirmation that a Panda or Penguin algorithm update has been released. We can confirm, with 100% certainty, that search results for Los Angeles personal injury related keywords have changed drastically in the last 48 hours. They are changing before our eyes as one particular law firm has gone from being #1 for many keywords to completely gone.
Once again, do not jump to conclusions if this has happened to your website. The more concerning event would be to find your website on page 7 or page 8 rather than completely gone. If the website is gone from search results, it will likely return in the near future. If you dropped to page 7 or page 8 you have likely been hit with an “over optimization” algorithm penalty.
