Spotify’s Top 100 Artists and Genres Streamed in 2017

Millennials are known for their desire to rent versus own, so it is no wonder a platform like Spotify has taken the 21st century by storm. Instead of paying song by song to own music and store it in your personal library, Spotify lets users stream all of the music they would ever want to hear from its app. There is a free version where users can cultivate their own playlists and play music for free with ad rotations. Then there is a monthly subscription service that lets users play music on the app even when they are offline without using data for streaming, and there are no ads. With the rise of mobile, Spotify has become a preferred music platform for many people who don’t feel the need to own the music they listen to- which why would you if you only listened to your music on your computer and your phone?

Because of Spotify’s popularity, it is now one of the foremost authorities on the scene when it comes to today’s most popular music. Every year the platform releases the most streamed songs and artists from the year. In addition, Spotify lets fans see what their favorite genres, artists and songs have been.

While 2017’s results certainly are not surprising, they are interesting to look into especially compared to 2016’s results. Despite working through substance abuse issues and deleting his Twitter, Ed Sheeran has still landed as the number one most streamed artist of 2017. The other highest streamed artists will not come as a surprise, however only Drake remains in the top five from year to year.

  1. Ed Sheeran
  2. Drake
  3. The Weeknd
  4. Kendrick Lamar
  5. The Chainsmokers

2016 saw a very different list of artists, which showcases electronic music’s rise in 2017 with electronic music, rap and pop diversifying 2017’s top five versus 2016’s pop and rap list. 2016 saw bands, solo artists, and rappers topping the charts from Twenty-One pilots all the way to Rihanna.

  1. Drake
  2. Justin Bieber
  3. Rihanna
  4. Twenty-One Pilots
  5. Kanye West

Drake was the number one most streamed artist in 2015 and 2016, making Sheeran’s feat of dethroning him at the top spot that much more impressive. No females made it in the top five this year, so the top five most streamed women on Spotify were as follows. This list could be the least surprising list reported.

  1. Rihanna
  2. Taylor Swift
  3. Selena Gomez
  4. Ariana Grande
  5. Sia

One interesting list that Spotify compiles is the ‘emerging genres’ section, which saw everything from melodic power metal to Gamercore as genre’s to watch.

  1. Melodic Power Metal
  2. Chaotic Black Metal
  3. Chillhop
  4. Trap Latino
  5. Future Funk
  6. Jumpstyle
  7. Serialism
  8. Cinematic Dubstep
  9. Vintage Swoon
  10. Gamecore

Ultimately, 2017 in music streaming shows that globally, listener’s love their rap, pop, and now electronic music. Rock and metal could definitely have an uptick given that the first two ‘emerging genres’ of music include metal. Music is a mixture of talent, marketing, and the right place at the right time, so what 2018 will bring can only be a guess for now. As millennials continue to move away from owning to streaming, platforms like Spotify will have the most accurate music consumption findings as this trend continues to become mainstream.
