Guest Post by Anika Morjaria
Hey guys! So a quick introduction, my name is Anika Morjaria (aka @LiterallyAnika on all social media) and I wanted to share some of my Snapchat secrets with those of you that are looking for a little boost in views!
I recently posted a video on my YouTube channel “10 lessons I learnt in 2015” and one of them was “Dont Knock it before you try it”. This was in relation to Snapchat. I probably downloaded and deleted the app about ten times, however in October I decided to give it one last shot and I’m so glad I did! I just never understood it, could not get to grips with all the swiping and had no idea what a story was. It was alien to me and now I’m telling you guys how I use it!
Now I know many people still get a lot more views than I do but I still feel proud of how far I have come from complete beginner and no idea how to even start a story to at least knowing a little something about the platform. So for those of you that are after a boost in views or for those of you that have no clue how to use the app, here are some tit bits of information I have learnt over my first 3 months on Snapchat.
1. Post Snapcode on all other social media accounts –
Most people add me by Snapcode and I post this Snapcode EVERYWHERE! You can get the full quality version of your snapcode from the snapchat website:
I have it as my cover photo on my Facebook business page, I post it on Instagram, Twitter and on my YouTube videos as well as on my website. I even have my Snapcode on my business card. Although I haven’t done this yet, you could take things even further and create Snapcode stickers and just go around your city sticking them everywhere! Its another way to get discovered and if people like your content they will continue to view your snaps 🙂
One other trick with this Snapcode is to customize it. I edited a good quality image of myself and placed it in the white section where the Ghost is. This allows people to see clearly who I am and it makes it a lot more personal than just a white ghost. Just be sure to only use the white area. The website has all the guidelines for customization so read those to learn more and then post this EVERYWHERE!
Another way I have managed to up my views on Snapchat is to tell people on Periscope! I absolutely love Periscope and LIVE stream every day. Snapchat is a great way to keep my periscope friends informed about what I am doing when I am not periscoping so I always mention this at the end of my LIVE streams.
Using other platforms is powerful since snapchat doesn’t really have a discover feature.
2. Snapchat Vlogs
It might seem a little strange but people love people and as boring as it may seem to you other people may very well be interested in your day to day activities. Snapchat vlogs are a great way to do this but I would choose days when you have something a little interesting going on. Take people through your day from the moment you wake up. Share your emotions, thoughts, frustrations and even share moments when things go wrong. Its all about being relatable and authentic.
3. Embrace your inner child
The great thing about snapchat is you can be as goofy as you want. It really is a platform where boundaries do not exist and silliness is allowed. Do not hold back! Ive even had my grandma stick out her tongue for the rainbow filter. If she can do that, you can do anything 😉 . The beauty of snapchat is it allows the user (you) to be as raw and real as possible which is awesome because a lot of the other social media platforms like Instagram are moving down a more professional highly filtered route. Don’t get me wrong I love Instagram however the rawness of snapchat to me is just well more my thing to best honest (and millions of others too) As social media gets busier it is hard to know what is real and what is not but it is hard to fake a snapchat which is what makes it so great. Periscope is another platform which knocks out filters and edits and forces the user to just do them and this is one of the key reasons it has done so well. You can’t go on periscope and pretend to be someone else, it doesn’t work, people will catch on. It is all about authenticity. Snapchat is the same.
4. Snapchat Tricks I use a lot
Some of you may already know these tricks but many of you might not so I thought id share the tricks i use the most. If you already know them then this point can be a reminder to start using all the options that snapchat gives you even more than you do now. Using filters and the drawing tool can really make your snaps more interesting! You don’t have to be an artist, a few lines to add a little colour, can really make a difference.
a- Extra colors -click on the pen icon, then place your finger on the color bar and without taking it off the screen move your finger around the screen. This should unlock lots more colors for you to use. My favorite is actually using black and white.
b- Extra text- sometimes you just need to write more! – head to notes or a text message in your phone then type:
Copy and paste that whole block into snapchat text and you should get more space to type! This is great for leading people to your other platforms too as it gives you space to type URLs which people can screenshot (i use it for my Youtube Channel) or your social media handle along with a caption. Its just nice to have extra text sometimes!
c-. Double filters – swipe for filter one then once filter 1 is set hold one finger down on the screen and use the other finger to swipe for a second filter. This is really fun to use when using the rewind option for example and pair it with slo mo.
d- MUSIC- music is huge and is probably one of my most favorite things to use. Its so simple to do, just play a song from your spotify or iPod player on your phone then as it is playing head to snapchat, click record and wait a second or two and the snap should now have music!
5. Be regular
This is huge. You want your story to be at the top of all your friends list so when they click on snapchat they see your story in front of them. The days I am regular with my snaps are the days I get increased views. You just want to make sure however that you are actually posting something interesting, funny or cool to look at and not just 100 selfies.
So those are some of the things I have learnt over my first few months on snapchat. Crazy to think I had no idea how to use snapchat a few months ago and how obsessed I am now. One last thing I would like to say, and I kind of mentioned it before is that people like people so make sure you are in your snaps and its not just your food (see so many snaps of just food and nothing else….don’t be a food snapper). Use the video to your advantage and chat to your viewers, engage with them. Video is powerful and so are you, so put those two together and your gold 🙂
Bonus Tip: Be nice to Jesse and he might just shout you out. Thats some more views for you 😉
