We knew it wouldn’t take long for this news to come out – businesses are going to pay to have special Snapchat selfie filters. There was no way Snapchat was not going to try and monetize millions of selfies floating around on smartphones. Major movie companies and brands will be more than willing to fork over $500,000 to $750,000 for a chance to remain in the Snapchat selfie rotation for seven days. A full week prior to Deadpool coming out, it would make sense for Fox and/or Marvel to pay for a Deadpool selfie filter. Think about Target during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. These are great branding opportunities.
There has been mention that users could click through to a Snapchat channel or a potential video promoting an item. While this is not a bad idea, Snapchat has yet to allow clickable links within their interface. I am 100% certain Snapchat is not going to allow brands to encourage users to leave the Snapchat app. The only clickable opportunities will be to Snapchat channels for those particular brands or businesses.
We are just getting started with advertising on Snapchat. McDonalds was the first company to offer location based filters. Look for any company selling to the younger crowd to jump on the opportunity for location based filters as well as Snapchat Selfie filters. What companies do you think would benefit from selfie filters?
