On March 5th, 2015 the featured Snapchat Story was from the Taiwan Lantern Festival. Prior to this story I had no idea what the Taiwan Lantern Festival was. Like all Snapchat Stories, we were able to “virtually” experience the fun of this event. In 2015, the Taiwan Lantern Festival will take place from March 5th through the 15th. Snapchat Stories only last for 24 hours so it looks as if they are highlighting the first 24 hours of the event. Here are some of the screenshots I took:
Everything from rice balls to fireworks to crazy outfits were featured on the Snapchat Story on Thursday, March 5th, 2015. The Snapchat Story was 94 seconds the last time I was able to access it. Snapchat has not added anything to this particular Snapchat Story over the last few hours and that is to be expected because in the middle of the work day in the United States it is the middle of the night in Taiwan.
As many people have said, Snapchat is the only social media app in which users are actually interested in the products/stories that are promoted. You can learn a lot about the culture of other areas but just checking out the Snapchat Stories every day. History of the Taiwan Lantern Fest
This is actually a very modern festival that started in 1990. There are different locations every year with the first several festivals being in Taipei City. In 2015 the festival is being held in Taichung Park and Fengyuan District, Taichung City. There is a theme for the “main lantern” that has to do with the signs of the Chinese astrology. All of the main lanterns are over 10 meters tall. Since 1999 there has been theme music with the main lantern.
Smaller lanterns are carried by children and often show images of historical figures, birds or images of the theme. There were several different parts of the Snapchat Story that showed the smaller lanterns. The 2016 Taiwan Lantern Festival will start on February 22nd if you would like to attend or you can just watch on Snapchat again next year.
