Yik Yak Reaches #3 App in iTunes App Store Ahead of Facebook and Twitter

On Thursday, September 11th, 2014 the Yik Yak iPhone app has reached new heights. For the first time, it has entered the top 5 on the iTunes Charts for free apps. The only two apps ahead of the Yik Yak app are Facebook Messenger and The Tower. With The Tower being a game I would fully expect to see Yik Yak in the #2 spot very soon. This means more iPhone users are downloading Yik Yak than Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tinder and WhatsApp. This tells you just how popular this location based bulletin board has become.

In the next few weeks it will be interesting to see if Yik Yak can keep up the moment. The market is starting to get saturated at some college and universities but it is still the “talk of the town”. During any major event at UNC most of the freshman and sophomores are on Yik Yak blasting away their feelings or thoughts. The geofencing and location adjustments have changed things a bit which could cause the growth to slow a little bit.

Yakarma and Geofencing Change the Yik Yak Game

Over the last two or three days many Yik Yak users have complained that their Yakarma has not moved. I experienced this myself. Earlier today, I noticed that Yakarma was starting to accumulate again. It looks as if Yik Yak is testing new locations and methods for Yakarma. From my apartment, I was able to see all the UNC Yaks just a few days ago. Today, that is not the case. I am only seeing two or three Yaks in the last hour. When I drive on campus or just a few hundred yards from my apartment I can see between 10 and 15 Yaks every single minute.

With Yik Yak being so location based it makes sense that the company would try to keep the Yaks exclusive to the college campus. That said, those that live in apartments off campus or near the campus will not be able to participate the way they could just a few days ago. I have read a few articles stating that you could only “communicate” with Yaks that were within 1.5 miles of where you were. This may have been true but I live a few miles from the UNC campus and I was able to vote and submit posts prior to this week. Note that Yik Yak is blocked at local high schools and middle schools.

I am not certain if they are still testing or maybe they just updated their maps to keep the location more focused. As I have said many times, the location focus is going to make students feel exclusive. Anyone not on campus will not be able to vote on Yaks or submit posts. While this is great for exclusivity I think local apartment complexes and areas around campus would benefit from being in this radius.

On Franklin Street, beside UNC, there are many local restaurants and stores that will benefit from Yik Yak mentions. If Yik Yak is so tight with their locations students that are posting from the stores or restaurants will not be able to engage with those that are on the south side of campus. I guess we will see what happens as time moves on. One thing is for certain, college students absolutely love the Yik Yak app.
